I was invited to experience a day spa in Batam Recently. Familia spa is a new establishment since April 2016 and not only do they offer the standard massage packages, the facilities also included a swimming pool as well as a restaurant, so you can swim, relax and indulge in every senses.
I was pretty surprised at the entire when I first arrived. It was the traditional Balinese style decoration. In fact the industrial style building would not give you a hint at all that it was a spa and recreation place.
As it is very new, the place looks neat and well decorated. Each room is softly lit and for couples or doubles, you get the option to book a villa instead of their individual rooms on the second floor.
They even have a dedicated foot reflexology hall. While I kinda understood the whole galaxy/sci-fi vibe, my friend thought it would be funnier if they had some belly dancers on the centre stage. Nevertheless, the room nd huge armchairs were comfortable.
I was rather impressed by the changing rooms and toilet facilities. Familia Spa definitely wanted to take their customers into a relaxing mode of a Balinese dream. The facilities, albeit modern; gave a Balinese resort vibe, which is opposite of what the exterior screams of.
And only if you enter their realm would you experience it. Nothing was given away at the entrance at all.
I also noticed that modern spas now imitate locker rooms to that of Japanese onsens — from the usage of a RFID tag for lockers to the design of the locker rooms.
We were there in the morning for a full body massage by these two petite and pretty masseuse ladies. Do not be fool by their small sizes, the pressure they use to kneed out those gilts are immense! My friend and I had to ask them to lighten their strength!!
I’m not a massage enthusiast but my friend is. She had commented that while their strength is commendable, there are still areas of improvement.
However, I felt that this is the place to go for those of you who prefers a stronger pair of hands!
Overall, I must say, the massage experience was pretty interesting (being the both of us were going ssss and ouches and getting the masseuses to lighten their strength) but my shoulder muscles was very much relieved, especially since I had frozen shoulders from long working hours at a website programming job.
After a good long massage, we had lunch at the bistro next door. The bistro had a football club feel to it, with televisions at one end, alcoholic bar and dart machines at the other end. However, one thing I didn’t really like was the cigarette stained smell that lingered in the bistro. However, I guess that is the main draw of such a place — a place to chill and probably puff a few sticks away; not that I’m supportive of. I don’t like cigarette smoke.
Nevertheless, the food served during lunch was decent.
I had the sauna duck rice while my friend had the grilled duck rice. The dish was decent, the meat is pretty good. Overall, it was just okay. Although the rice was slightly dry and cold, it was tasty. I could imagine they had tried to emulate the concept of chicken rice in this dish, and I can say they did score a fair point in this dish. Warning to non-chilli eating folks though, the chilli is extremely spicy. Not for the faint-hearted.
The pineapple juice was on the other hand, refreshing and well done. I thoroughly enjoyed the juice drink. How could you not? When the fruit was fresh and sweet, honestly, there was no need to add in the sugar syrup that came with the drink. The locals probably need that extra sugar high but it was enough for me on its own.
The experience at Familia Spa was good, just that they may need to kick up a notch in collaboration with local hotels and coaches to nearby shopping areas since the location was not exactly opposite or walking distance to Nagoya Hills Shopping Mall. As I did not stay near the Spa during my stay, I really cannot comment much on the surroundings.
The Roxy Mecure Hotel was nearby and I could imagine just staying there and have a day at Familia Spa.
The facilities were new, so the condition of the place are good and well maintained, but since there was a pool built into the spa, a nice place to rest and sleep after a relaxing pool time would be good, but the booking of villas usually comes with a massage package.
You can still use the swimming facilities at a fraction of the price, which was reasonable, but I felt it would be nice if there was available resting places to book so that one could rest after swimming.
The highlight of of the place would definitely be the massage. While I wasn’t a fan of a hard pressure massage, I knew that my dad and other friends who enjoyed hard pressure massage would find them perfect because it’s not easy to find locally in Singapore, masseuse with good strength and pressure when doing massages. Nevertheless, the ladies definitely helped me to relax and soften the tension on my neck area, which I was utterly grateful for the relief.
Nevertheless, the distance away from the shopping mall means you definitely can get a quiet hideaway experience.
