[CLOSED] Big Bear Bistro and Bar: Hidden Gem in the City

Lately, many little tiny restaurants have to slowly populating the island creating a whole new trend of off the commercial chain restaurant dining.
These little restaurants are often start-ups by young and unknown chefs and restaurateurs whom are passionate about food and their cooking.
Located in the heart of Bugis, hidden away from the mainstream shops, Big Bear Bistro and Bar is one fine example.
This tiny restaurant located along Tan Quee Lan Street is hidden in the midst of many steamboat joints in its surroundings.

Started innocently by a group of friends only for a place to drink and chill out, their recent addition of a very young chef takes the menu into another level.

The menu may look simple, but the taste is just another different world.

Mushroom Soup – SGD8.90

The mushroom soup in this restaurant is interesting.
Many of my friends I know would prefer a chunky creamy soup, but there is something about this soup being creamy at the beginning and slowly thins out when you hit the bottom of the bowl.

The soup is smooth and I felt that the mushroom soup actually starts your meal rather filling you up at the beginning. The thinning actually helps my palate to get ready for what comes next.

Big Bear’s Salad – SGD10.90

The salad was an interesting welcome, although I wasn’t craving for salad that day.
The fruity balsamic was quite refreshing with the greens and the selected cold cuts.

Calamari Fries – SGD10.90

Well, this is something I would look forward to.
Calamari fries.
Yup, you heard it right, not rings~ FRIES.

Calamari Fries

Served with a homemade tartar sauce, these fries were a hit with my friends, but I do prefer a bite of that calamari more that the crispy batter.

Fish Fingers – SGD9.90

I LOVE this!
I can’t emphasize my LOVE enough.
These fish fingers are to die for!
I did remember something about the science behind the special beer batter, which was created wholly by the chef, but this dish alone has made my mouth water for more.

The soft and juicy fish was totally trapped inside this super crispy special beer batter.
One bite and it crackles in your mouth (No kidding!!) and then followed by the juicy fish “swimming” in my mouth.

Fish Fingers

The orange mustard sauce is also a creation by the chef which complemented very well with the fish.
It just took the taste up to another level.

Seriously? Stop eating those fast-food fish fingers already and jump right into these!!!!

This dish just reminded me very much of Chef Heston Blumental and his love of “playing” with food. His quirky food creations on his show “Heston’s Feasts” are often based on food sciences which this dish happens to be parallel with.
You must try this to experience it!

Black Maiden – SGD15.90

Every chef has their own sentimentality. Designed for a girl in his life who couldn’t stand the taste of pepper, this dish is the perfect beginning for anyone who would love to try anything black pepper yet didn’t dare because either it was too overwhelming or spicy.

The pacific john dory is grilled and served with the right amount of black pepper sauce on it.
While us seasoned black pepper lovers would feel that it just need more sauce, but I could relate that it is just right for beginners.

So, if you are a season black pepper fella, ask the chef for more sauce thereafter, okay?

Hawaii Pork – SGD16.90

This is my favourite main: the Hawaii Pork.
The pork is juicy and succulent and it is SOFT. It wasn’t like those rubber chewy kind, but you can actually bite into the meat and let it slowly melt inside your mouth.

Marinated with a Caribbean fusion marinate, the pork collar is served with pineapple sauce, that reminded me so fondly of my recent trip to Hawaii. This is a must-try!

Luau~ Baby!

Bear love chips – SGD13.90

Fish and Chips: the bigger portion of fish fingers. Nuff’ said.
It is however, the chips that really got our taste buds. Compared to the normal and boring fish and chips everywhere else, the chips on this plate are potato strips, longish and broad enough to naw your jaws away in happiness.

Norwegian Salmon – SGD17.90

The Norwegian salmon is soft and the gherkin sauce is something new.
The sourish gherkins (or some would know it as pickles) gives that cream sauce some kick and the crunchiness mixed in with the soft texture of the salmon makes a unique experience.

Bacon Olio Aglio – SGD11.90

The bacon olio aglio is more peppery that garlicky.
I prefer my olio aglio more garlicky. However, if you love bacon, this one has some generous bite to boot.

Creamy Cheese Pasta – SGD14.90

This is another of my favourite!
Well, it is also all my friends favourite!
Triple cheese (Mozzarella, Parmesan and Cheddar), creamy pasta with bacon pieces toss in to give it an oomph!
I love that the spaghetti actually saps up the cheese sauce and it just coats your mouth with a layer of oh-so-cheesy goodness.
A must-try for cheese lovers!

Banana Sabayon – SGD13.80

The name gives nothing away other than it has banana in it.
Specially created by the chef, the luminous yellow sauce is made from egg yolk.
Oh my, I never thought egg yolk can be made into such a delicious dessert!

The char-grilled banana topped with the special egg sauce with a scoop of ice cream was definitely the highlight of the night. This dessert although simple looking, just ain’t no where near simple.
This is a definite must-try!

Red Wine Poached Pear – SGD15.80
While I do heard of poach pears as an exquisite and expensive dessert, I have yet to try it prior. This poach pear is soaked in red wine for 3 days before it is served to the table.
The pear is soft, and it felt like eating a slice of sweet Sashimi with a tender bite. The marriage of red wine with the pear makes it an experience to taste.
The restaurant is good for first time dating, business lunch/dinner and just intimate dining with love ones.
